The Quantitative and Qualitative Assessment of Groundwater in Karbala Governorate, Iraq

Abstract Karbala governorate, however, neighborhood the western desert, which bounded by longitudes (43° 09' 41" – 44° 18' 56") and latitudes (32° 10' 15" 32° 50' 15") with total area study of 4987 km 2 , represents part sedimentary plain belongs to unstable shelf Salman zone stable shelf. The main geological formations that exposed in studied represented Al-Fatha Fn. (M. Miocene), Injana (U. Dibdiba (Pliocene - pliestocene) Quaternary (Pliestocene Holocene). Two underground reservoirs were distinguished based on facies (four water reservoirs) as well. Quantitatively, assessment was climatic information (rainfall, temperature humidity) for (39 years) period (1980 2019), so, using Thornorite equation surplus calculated representing renewable storage unconfined aquifer amounted (110.9 * 10 6 m 3 /year), while fixed both systems (unconfined confined) (7.68 9 ) (6.16 respectively, equivalent (13.84 ). While qualitatively, utilizing data bank (151 wells) general commission groundwater (2013) addition some available field data. results reveal there wells are within permissible limits be used drinking purposes, can municipal after conducting biological tests them, although they should not agriculture.
